Entry # 114 – A87 Regarding the Proclivities of the Kodai and their Relation to the Development of the Technocratic Order of Concordant Systems
It is a dangerous and common folly to view the Technocratic Order of Concordant Systems (more colloquially referred to as simply “The Order”) as a mere political alliance. It strikes closer to the truth to recognize its’ endurance and relative passivity over timescales which humanity can scarcely conceptualize, much less relate to. As we seek to form an understanding, let us first begin with a survey of the founding race.
At the heart of this Order are the Kodai, an ancient amphibian race originating from the shallow oceans of a world that remains their singular focus of habitation. One immediately wonders how a single planet has sustained galactic-scale exploration while other sentients burned through their homeworlds in the relative blink of an eye. While they have adapted to terrestrial life, their true nature is revealed by the gills upon their necks and the fact that their most magnificent cities remain submerged. This has earned them the anachronistic moniker of “Atlanteans”.
They are a physically imposing people, standing over two meters tall with a slender, muscular build and four thick digits on each hand. Kodai exhibit an astoundingly slow metabolism, more on par with a mollusk in Earth’s now-parched oceans than one would expect of a space-faring sentient. This biological efficiency allows them to live for centuries, with some elder individuals reportedly exceeding a thousand years of age by Terran standard. In a further rebuff to human understanding is the complete opacity of Kodai lifecycle and reproduction. Kodai, for all their morphological variety, have no recognizable gender-defining features. Furthermore, there are no confirmed records of Kodai juveniles. If I may take the liberty of conjecture, I find it plausible that the Kodai pursue a strategy of limited and resource-intensive reproduction which is limited exclusively to their homeworld.
To move beyond the individual to discuss the collective, it should be noted that Kodai are fully capable of both spoken and telepathic communication. It is unclear whether this telepathic communication is partially latent or fully enabled by biotechnology. What we do know is that the gemstones often present in the foreheads of mature Kodai are, in some way, augmentative to this process. With the ability to communicate directly, privately, and intuitively, it should be no wonder that their society has developed in a similar way. They are intensely secretive, governed by an elite group of scientists and experts, through whispers in a secret council with planning horizons stretching into the tens of thousands of years. Despite their vast age and technological superiority, they have never shown an interest in the vulgar expansionism of younger races; they have never colonized beyond their home system, choosing instead to maintain a network of outposts for commercial and research purposes alone.
In matters of conflict, the Kodai are often understood as something of a paradox. Their technology and habits defy the orthodoxy of conventional combat. In both spacecraft and individual, they seem to shun physical armor entirely, relying instead on mobility, evasion, and advanced ship shielding. Xenologists note that all Kodai encountered display numerous battle scars; whether these are ritualistic in nature is a matter of debate, but it hints at a curious indifference. Their spacecraft are organic, asymmetrical works of art, typically colored in hues of turquoise and green-blue that mimic their home habitat. In keeping with their philosophy of agility, Kodai ships are smaller than ships of other spacefaring sentients by orders of magnitude. Again, it is a matter of conjecture whether larger vessels have simply not been encountered or do not exist.
